The history of Sion in Uk / Ireland
The first group of Sisters arrived in England from Paris in March 1860 at the request of Cardinal Manning who at that time was the superior of the Oblates of St Charles at the Church of St Mary of the Angels, Bayswater. He accompanied the sisters from France to England. The sisters' first home was in Westmoreland Road near the church. Shortly afterwards, in 1862, they mover to Coleville Terrace, then to Powis Square in 1873. At the same time, in 1861, the sisters started a foundation in Worthing, Sussex, at the request of Bishop Grant of Southwark. The school there still exists today.
In 1870, a third foundation was made at Eden Grove, Holloway at the request of Fr Keens who was an Oblate of St Charles and had been appointed parish priest in that area.
Finally, the Bayswater house at Chepstow Villas was built between 1890 and 1892 during the time when Mother Judith was Superior at Powis Square. She saw the need for a larger property to house the community and the school and worked hard to achieve all the
necessary permissions and money needed to build this enormous building.
The school remained at Chepstow Villas until the 1970s when the school system in England changed, and the Sion school at Chepstow Villas amalgamated with Cardinal Manning School to become the new Sion Manning School.
