Shakespeare Theatre Day for Year 4 and 5 Pupils

Our Lady of Sion Junior School Year 4 and 5 pupils enjoyed a Shakespeare Workshop, with Rainbow Theatre, based on several of Shakespeare’s plays including Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, The Tempest and Romeo and Juliet. The children all  had the opportunity to part in the Shakespeare scenes performed.

Year 4 are currently studying A Midsummer Night’s Dream in English and Drama with Mrs Jones, so the workshop enabled them to act out some of the play. In History they are looking at Tudors and Stuarts, so learning about theatre in Shakespeare's time gave them an insight into Tudor Life.
Year 5 pupils are not doing Shakespeare currently, but have studied some of his work in the past, so enjoyed seeing his work brought to life.

The Workshop includes  actors’ warm-up games,  including the way Shakespeare uses language. The shipwreck scene from The Tempest  was acted out, with members of the audience taking part. Pupils then enjoyed the comedy of Bottom transforming in to an ass from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with some of the audience playing the fairy servants.   Finally  the duel scene from Romeo & Juliet was re-enacted.  The workshop is designed to allow pupils to participate at every stage, and join the professional actors in their exploration of Shakespeare at his most accessible and entertaining.
