Manchester

Sr Teresa Brittain moved to Manchester in November , 2005

Sr Teresa Brittain:

The Sisters of Sion first came to Salford in the 1950s. Sisters were then involved in education. Later we opened the house in Butterstile Lane, Prestwich, which was the formation house as it was in the Jewish area of the city. Manchester has a large Jewish community; after London it is the biggest in England. The house on Butterstile Lane became too small for the community, as we were eight sisters here at one time and we so we had another smaller house nearby in Chandos Road. We were involved in the local community in many different areas especially in Jewish Christian dialogue and parish ministry.

While I was out of the province the decision was made to close the house as our numbers did not warrant such a large house and this apartment was procured. I returned here to Manchester four months ago and am settling into a new area, a new living situation. It is all very interesting and challenging
I love the apartment. It is in a block of twelve and we form our own small community. All my neighbours on this floor are Jewish and are real friends. It's so nice to live this way! I have friends from the parish on the next floor and we gather for different things.

There is a prayer group which meets here in the flat every fortnight. There are about twenty who come and we are praying with scripture. During Lent we had a Bible study group and we studied the Lenten readings with commentaries. we really enjoyed it! I have had requests for more Bible study work and am hoping to bring something of studying Bible with Jewish commentaries here to the parish and groups in Manchester (Teresa Brittain).
