Province Pilgrimage to PolandDay 1 - HumanityToday we visited Auschwitz and Birkenau Lord, open our lips. And we shall declare your praise. Reflection I kneel before all the inscriptions that come one after another bearing the memory of the victims of Oswiecim In particular I pause with you, dear participants in this encounter, before the inscription in Hebrew. This inscription awakens the memory of the people whose sons and daughters were intended for total extermination. This people draws its origins from Abraham, our father in faith as was expressed by Paul of Tarsus. The very people who received from God the commandment "thou shalt not kill", itself experience in a special measure what is meant by killing. It is not permissible for anyone to pass by this inscription with indifference. (Pope John Paul during his pilgrimage to Auschwitz, 1979.) For God alone my soul waits; For my hope comes from God, Who alone is my rock, my stronghold, my fortress. I stand firm. In God is my salvation and glory, The rock of my strength. All your people, take refuge in God. Trusting at all times, Pour your hearts before God, our Refuge. (Psalm 62) Master of mercy, cover the souls of the six million dead in the shelter of Your wings forever, and bind their souls into the gathering of life. It is the Lord who is their heritage. May they be at peace in their place of rest. Amen. |
