To the City of David called Bethlehem
'Below is part of a letter sent by Sr Trudy, a member of the community at Ecce
Homo, one of Sion's main houses in Jerusalem. She describes how the sisters and
the students of the Biblical Pogramme went to Bethlehem on Christmas Eve.'
Dear each one.
As we are about to begin a new year I would like to wish each one every
blessing for a very fruitful, happy and healthy year. A year when we may see
more justice and peace in our world, and being here, I wish this especially for
this land and its peoples.
I hope that Christmas was a special time for all of you. We were able to join
the thousands of people who were able to come to Bethlehem this year. A group
of us set off after lunch on Saturday to walk to Bethlehem. It has been
threatening rain but we managed to remain dry till about 20 minutes before
Manger square, when we thought it wiser to get the local transport before we
were totally soaked. The rain really set in then, but we continued to enjoy
being there. We were able to visit the basilica of the Nativity, walk around,
eat some of the local food and this way to provide a little income for the
locals waiting for this day, and listen to a choir sing carols. We then set off
for the Shepherd's field where we had a lovely liturgy celebrated by our
students. After this some went back to the church of the Nativity while the
rest of us went back to the checkpoint in order to return to Jerusalem. The new
checkpoint at Bethlehem was a new experience for most. For Christmas the rules
for the checkpoint had been slackened and almost everyone was able to get
through without too much hassle.
Thank you for all the Christmas and New Year wishes and assurance of prayers.
Also a big thank you for all the generous support we received for the fund
throughout the year. It has helped many children as well as many in extreme
situations. Know of our gratitude and you are in our prayer.
With love
Trudy
