HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY
2008 This year Sion Centre for Dialogue and Encounter in London organized a study afternoon on the theme Imagine, Remember, Reflect, React. As people arrived they had a chance to see a rolling DVD produced by two students of Our Lady of Sion School, Worthing, after their visit to Auschwitz through the Holocaust Educational Trust. The production demonstrated mature reflection with a wide variety of evocative images from past and present. Participants were also able to view the exhibition of
pictures and captions, like this one, taken from a power-point presentation
produced by the Committee for Catholic-Jewish relations. Some of the
photographs were taken when the Sisters of Sion visited some of the camps in
Poland in September 2007. After lighting the memorial candles Dr Robin O'Neil, a Holocaust scholar, gave the first talk, a presentation of the background to the Holocaust and the story of Oscar Schindler. This was followed by the testimony of a survivor, Trude Levi who helped us to imagine what she and many others suffered during the Holocaust. Her talk led us into a period of quiet reflection and sharing of responses. We ended the afternoon by reading and signing the statement of commitment. About twenty people came together for this intimate and moving gathering. Trude Levi with Sr Ibolya standing by the Memorial Candles |
