11th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Ezekiel 17:22-24

Psalm 91

2 Corinthians 5:6-10

Mark 4:26-34

God creates and sustains life and has sovereignty over the whole of creation. This is one of the messages of today's readings. The prophet Ezekiel uses the language of trees and fruit bearing boughs to speak of God's power over all. In the preceding passage Ezekiel showed how the king of Israel had not kept the covenant with the Lord and so the whole nation was sent into exile in Babylon. When Ezekiel says that God will take off a new twig from the top of the cedar, he means that God will raise up a new king to rule over the house of Israel. God can humble the mighty and raise up new power from nothing.

In the Gospel Jesus tells the familiar parables of the growing seed and the mustard seed. Their small beginnings and their ultimate expansion and size are allusions to the kingdom of God. Making the reign of God a reality was very important in Jesus' time and the same is true for us today. The seeds of the kingdom may be very tiny but their potential is great. By sowing the seeds and allowing them to flourish we bring about God's kingdom of justice, peace and harmony. .

This week you are invited to reflect on the seeds you can sow today in your home, at work or in school. Even the smallest seeds are worth sowing. Remember you don't have to make them grow. That is God's work.
