Jeremiah 20:10 -13 Psalm 68 Romans 5:12-15 Matthew 10:26-33 How does God protect us when fear strikes? The first reading describes how Jeremiah complained to God when he compelled him to preach and prophesy the fall of Israel to Babylon. Jeremiah is punished for his words and angry with God but never loses sight of the fact that God is still with him and he can even continue to praise him. When Jesus commissioned his disciples he gave them instructions underlining the fact that Christian leadership is not a comfortable option but that the blessings do outweigh the pains. In this gospel passage Matthew has gathered a collection of sayings about the difficulties of an apostolic vocation. Jesus teaches that in spite of the difficulties and even threats to our lives, God cares for each of us and protects us. This week let us think about those people who have given their lives for the sake of the gospel or doing God's work. We may never be faced with persecution or even opposition for our beliefs and words but we can try to develop qualities of courage in the face of difficulties and trust in God even when people are unjustly against us. Then no matter what happens we can give God praise. Say the psalm with its response slowly and prayerfully and experience God's love and protection for his servant. |
