2 Kings 4:8-11.14-16 Psalm 88 Romans 6:3-4.8-11 Matthew 10:37-42 How do we treat the prophets in our midst? Are we skeptical about them and their promises or do we welcome them and listen to their words? The first reading today describes how the woman from Shunem, situated to the north-east of Samaria, recognized Elisha who stopped at her house as a holy man. The woman, who remained nameless, provided for him and received a promise from him that she, a childless woman, would indeed have a child. In the Gospel reading Jesus continues his instructions on discipleship. To be a disciple is a radical commitment, even to the extent of leaving one's family, although not everyone is called to such an extreme act. Jesus, in the tradition of the Hebrew Scriptures, commends those who welcome the disciple, and goes on to identify the disciple with himself and with the Father. The Father, the source of Christian discipleship, mediates both the Christian ministry and the blessings derived from it, to Jesus and to his disciples. Do we welcome those who have given their lives to the service of God? Do we give them hospitality and listen to their words? Discipleship brings unforeseen blessings both to the disciple and to those they serve. Do I open myself up to those blessings? Let the words of Jesus sink into your being this week. |
