13th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Wisdom 1:13 -15; 2:23 -24 Psalm 29 2 Corinthians 8:7.9.13-15 Mark 5:21-43

The Book of Wisdom was written in 2nd century BCE and is very preoccupied with Greek ideas of life after death. These extracts show a firm belief in the immortality of human beings created in God's image. Eternal life is a gift of God while death is brought about by the devil which the author equates with the serpent in the garden of Eden. This death is not physical but spiritual because it is only experienced by the wicked.

Physical death is the focus of today's gospel. The main story is the healing of Jairus' young daughter who was very ill when her father approached Jesus. While Jesus was dealing with the woman with the haemorrhage the child died and was already being mourned by her relatives when Jesus arrived at the house. Jesus told the girl to get up which she did at once thus revealing Jesus' power over the powers of death.

Many of us are preoccupied with physical sickness and ultimate death but perhaps we should be just as much concerned about spiritual sickness. In what ways are we spiritually sick? You are invited to spend some time today reflecting on your need of inner healing. Take your concerns to the Lord for he can heal our spiritual ills as much as our physical ones.

Read today's psalm slowly and prayerfully. Reflect on St Paul's letter to the Galatians and ask the Lord for guidance.

I.
