15th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Amos 7:12-15 Psalm 84 Ephesians 1:3-14 Mark 6:7-13

We are all chosen by God to carry out a task in life. This is the message of the readings today. In the first reading the prophet Amos has been insulted by Amaziah the priest and told to go back to his home country of Judah and earn his living there. Amos replies that he didn't belong to a guild or group of prophets; it was God who had called him and sent him to prophesy to the northern kingdom of Israel. .

IThe twelve apostles, too, were sent out to preach and heal, their activities being an extension of Jesus' ministry. Jesus gave specific instructions for their journey and material and physical wellbeing took second place to preaching the kingdom in word and deed. The lack of concern for material comforts reflects the urgency of the apostles' task and the trust in God that is required. Travelling preachers depended on local hospitality so if that was not offered the apostles were told to leave that place.

Reflect today on your own chosenness by God. Read the words of St Paul to the Ephesians and make a prayer of thanksgiving. .

What is the task you are chosen to do in life? Talk to God about this today. Perhaps you have been carrying out your task for some years, perhaps only for a short time or perhaps you are still waiting for the call from God to discover your task. If it helps, talk this over with a friend or spiritual guide. me.
