Jeremiah 23:6 Psalm 22 Ephesians 2:13-18 Mark 6:30-34

"The Lord is my shepherd" is probably the best known of all the psalms. It is chosen for today's liturgy because the theme of the shepherd runs through the readings. When the people of Israel started asking God for a king the request was refused because God alone was their king. However God relented and their wish was granted but many of the kings ruled badly and were compared, as in today's first reading, to bad shepherds who don't look after their flock. David was always regarded as the ideal king and so a future age was anticipated when a branch of the house of David would rule once again over Israel and Judah with wisdom, honesty and integrity.

IJesus had pity on the crowds who followed him and his disciples because they were like sheep without a shepherd, looking for a shepherd/king who would lead them. When the disciples returned from their mission Jesus had sent them on they tried to find a quiet place away from the crowds but the people managed to get there before them. When Jesus perceived their need he started to teach them at length.

Who are our shepherds? The bishops are entrusted with that role and their crook is a symbol of their task of leading their flock - the diocese. Do we listen to their teaching? Do we have other leaders we follow closely? Reflect on those whose words you listen to most.

Can you pray today's psalm with conviction?
