2 Kings 4:42-44 Psalm 144 Ephesians 4:1-6 John 6:1-15 The story from the book of Kings was obviously the inspiration for the multiplication story in the New Testament. Elisha was "a man of God", a prophet who revealed the hand of God. Here Elisha's miraculous powers show that God provides the people with their needs. IJohn's account of the feeding of the five thousand is set in the section of the gospel on the bread of life. The evangelist wants to teach his readers that Jesus is the bread of life who sustains believers. He is the messianic prophet, but he is not a king in the sense of a national liberator but one who will bring about the reign of God. The abundance of life in the kingdom of God is shown by the collection of 12 baskets of leftovers after all had eaten what they needed. . Today's psalm is one of thanksgiving for all that God's creatures receive from him. Read the psalm today, slowly and prayerfully.. Spend time in thanksgiving for the gift of the Eucharist today. Speak to the Lord about what the bread of life means to you.
