17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Genesis 18:20-32 Psalm 137 Colossians 2:12-14 Luke 11:1-13

We may be tempted to think at times that God does not answer our prayers or even listen to them, but the readings today show that God does indeed respond. In the first reading Abraham is persistent in his dealings with God and persuades God not to destroy Sodom because some of the wickedness of some of the people there. Recognising that even just ten people in the town may be good-living God is merciful to all.

In the gospel Jesus teaches his disciples how to pray with the prayer we know as the "Our Father" each part of which has its roots in the Jewish tradition. It is a very intimate prayer in which Christians worldwide address God as Father and ask him for our most basic everyday needs. But Jesus adds that we also have to be persistent in our prayer. We have to ask, search, and knock at the door. In this way we participate with God in re-creating the world.

Although God knows our needs, the gospel and the example of Abraham invite us to enter into a relationship with God and find our voices to speak to him of what is in our hearts. Let us find our voices and speak to him today.
