Deuteronomy 26:4-10 Psalm 90 Romans 10:8-13 Luke 4:1-13 Lent is essentially a wilderness experience. It is a time to allow ourselves to be taken into our innermost beings and learn how to rely on the Lord, our God. The people of Israel experienced forty years in the wilderness and in that time they learnt that God had brought them out from their condition of slavery in Egypt to the freedom of the Promised Land. In the first reading Moses instructs them to recite God's great deeds for them and to bring him thanksgiving offerings from the plentiful land that God has brought them to. Then in the Gospel reading Luke relates how after his baptism, Jesus was led out into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit to be tempted. The devil showed Jesus that he had the means to use his power for his own purposes, but Jesus, believing in God's fidelity to his covenant people, put his trust in Him. Lent is a time to reflect on our own lives and God's great love for us. Can we see how God is present even in our difficult wilderness experiences? This week let us remember with our lips and in our hearts what God does for us in our lives and say a prayer of thanksgiving. |
