Isaiah 63:16-17; 64:1.3-8 Psalm 79 1Corinthians 1:3-9 Mark 13:33-37 We begin on this first Sunday of the liturgical year, to look forward to the coming of the Lord. At one level, we re-live the anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ; at another level we look forward to his second coming. The prophet Isaiah remembered that God had been his people's redeemer in the past. Now he calls on God to come down to them again after their time in exile, as they are ready to place themselves once again into God's hands. The people of Israel anticipated a "Day of the Lord". This hope became for Christians the time when the world will know the full presence of Christ in glory. The passage from Mark's gospel urges us to "stay awake" because we do not know when that Day will be. St Paul thanks God that the Christians in Corinth have been blessed with many gifts of the Spirit. We too have been blessed with gifts for the enrichment of our own lives and for the wider community. This week you are invited to reflect on your own gifts. Spend some time thanking God for your gifts this week and reflect on how you can use them. "Stay awake!" What do those words mean to you today? Are you alert to the presence of the Lord in the world? Let the Lord speak these words to you each day this week.
