Jeremiah 33:14-16 1Thessalonians 3:12-4.2 Luke 21: 25-28; 34-36 It might seem strange at the beginning of the Church's year to have an account of Jesus describing the end of days. This is because the season of Advent was once a time to look forward to the second coming of Jesus; now Advent looks forward to his first coming as well. When the Son of Man comes, Luke tells us, our liberation is close at hand. The prophet Jeremiah also speaks of liberation when he proclaims that a remnant of the kingdom of Judah will turn back to the Lord and practise honesty and integrity. Then Judah shall be saved from the threat of Assyrian oppression, as the Lord had promised. Eventually political freedom came to Judah. Ultimately our liberation will come, but we must be ready, says the gospel, and stay awake. Advent is a time for us to prepare for that day. Why not light an Advent candle each day this week and pray that your heart may be ready at Christmas.
