20th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Proverbs 9:1-6 Psalm 33 Ephesians 5:15-20 John 6:51-58

This week's readings continue on the theme of bread. In the first reading wisdom is depicted as offering her teachings in the form of a banquet. In eating bread and drinking wine the simple will learn how to live and walk in the ways of perception.

IThe gospel today continues the teaching from John on the bread of life which Jesus identifies with himself. He is the living bread which has come down from heaven. Eating his flesh and drinking his blood will bring eternal life and the promise of resurrection. Just as Jesus draws life from the father, so by eating this bread the believer will draw life from him.

The readings will remind the Christian of the gift of the Eucharist in our lives. Each time we receive the Eucharist we receive the same life and the same promise spoken of in the gospel. The simple food of bread and wine are easy to take for granted but it is good to reflect on the hidden meaning within them. Can you spend some time today thanking God for the gifts and promises contained in the Eucharist?

Ask God for the gift of wisdom today and read the letter of St Paul carefully.
