21st Sunday of Ordinary Time

Joshua 24:1-2. 15-18 Psalm 33 Ephesians 5:21-32 John 6:60 - 69

The readings today are about faithfully following the Lord. The people of Israel gathered at Shechem to present themselves before God in a covenant ceremony. Joshua asked them to choose who they would follow - the God of Israel or the gods of the people in whose land they now lived. The people committed themselves to serving God, the God who had brought their ancestors out of Egypt and protected them on their travels.

IIn today's Gospel Jesus, aware that some of his disciples found his teaching that he is the bread of life difficult, said that only those drawn by the Father would be able to accept him. Some of the disciples then left but when Jesus challenged the inner group of Twelve whether they would also leave, Simon Peter confesses Jesus as his Lord.

We are often challenged in our following of the Lord and tempted to worship wealth, pleasure or power above God. Imagine yourself at Shechem or as one of Jesus' disciples. How do you respond? Are you drawn towards the Lord? Can you make a statement of commitment? Use the words of Peter's statement, if you wish, as you speak to the Lord.
