22nd Sunday Ordinary Time

Jeremiah 20:7-9
Psalm 62
Romans 12:1-2
Matthew 16:21-27

In the first reading Jeremiah is trying to come to terms with the meaning of his life as a prophet. He thinks that God has seduced him, even tricked him because he has experienced insults when he proclaimed God's word to the people of Judah. Yet, in spite of all this he finds God's call irresistible.

In the passage from Matthew's gospel, we hear the first prediction of the passion and death of Jesus in Jerusalem, the city where the prophets die. Peter wants only glory for his Lord but Jesus teaches his disciples that the cost of following him will probably involve suffering and pain symbolised by "the cross". It certainly involves seeking God's will and what is right, not seeking primarily for one's own happiness.

This week let us pray with the words of Psalm 62 reminding us that it is God we are searching for in our lives. Our lives may be a struggle but God's call to us is insistent and God is there even when we think our "cross" is too much to bear.
