Isaiah 62:1-5; 1 Cor.12: 4-11; John 2:1-11 Today's Gospel tells us about Jesus at a wedding and the ancient poem from the prophet Isaiah tells about God becoming a bridegroom to his people giving them a new name, "My Delight". Isaiah, writing after the people had returned from their exile in Babylon, saw that God would rejoice in the newly built Jerusalem just as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride. This will be a new beginning for Israel. In the Gospel of John, the miracles are signs of who Jesus is and therefore of the nature of God. This first sign uses the biblical imagery of wine to signify the superabundance of God's provisions for us. With God, the ordinary becomes the extraordinary. God's gifts to each of us, described by Paul in his letter to the Corinthians, can also make the ordinary extraordinary. What gift has God given to me to make the ordinary extraordinary? Can I use it to transform our community or to enhance my family life or my workplace? |
