Acts 2: 42-47 Psalm 117 1 Peter 1: 3-9 John 20: 19-31 The reading from the Acts of the Apostles paints a very idealistic picture of the earliest Christians who were faithful to the teaching they had received from the apostles and lived an exemplary community life. The frequent breaking of the bread at the Eucharist nourished their newfound faith. The first letter of Peter spells out the Christian message that God has raised Jesus Christ from the dead. This truth gave his readers the hope that they as God's children would inherit eternal life. They awaited their salvation filled with indescribable joy. In the Gospel we hear how Jesus appeared to his disciples on the first Easter Sunday in the evening. Thomas, who was not there, would not believe until he had seen the Lord with his own eyes. The gospel ends by inviting us to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and to have life through his name. Think about your own Christian community today. How do you support one another? Is Christian hope and joy part of your life? Does the Eucharist strengthen your bonds? Spend some time today reflecting on the strength of your own faith. Do you need firm evidence like Thomas before you believe? Be still and listen to Jesus speaking words of encouragement to you, giving you life. |
