30th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Jeremiah 31:7-9 Psalm 125 Hebrews 5:1-6 Mark 10:46-52

How often do we stand back and think about the good things that have happened to us? In our first reading today Jeremiah, the prophet, speaks on God's behalf to exhort the people of Israel to praise God for having saved them and for bringing them back from exile to their own land. We can probably all identify with the psalmist when he says that his deliverance from bondage seemed like a dream.

The man in the Gospel story was blind and shouted out for Jesus to have pity on him. Jesus cured the man because of his faith in him as the Son of David, a messianic title.

When the people of Israel were suffering and the blind man had been reduced to begging, they called on God's name and put their trust in him. Afterwards, the people rejoiced in God's saving action and felt comforted as God led them to streams of water. The man cured of blindness could "see" now in a different way and followed Jesus. When we meet Jesus in the Eucharist, when God has released us from our own bondage, do we see things in a new light and allow ourselves to be led by him?
