33rd Sunday Ordinary Time

Proverbs 31:10-13.19-20.30-31
Psalm 127
Thessalonians 5:1-6
Matthew 25:14-30

At this time in the Church's year our attention is drawn towards the end-times, a time of judgment on the quality of the life we have led. The wisdom literature in the Old Testament shows how much importance was laid on acquiring the quality of wisdom to help a person live a good life. The reading today is from the last section of the book of Proverbs and echoes the themes in the book as a whole. Wisdom is compared to a priceless woman who engages in ceaseless activity and, like wisdom's value to her followers, is of enormous worth to her husband.

The gospel passage offers a commentary on the use of the master's goods before the judgment to come. A talent was a valuable coin which the servants in the parable were given while the master was away. The one given the most talents made more money while the one given the least hid it in the ground, taking no risks. The ones who made a profit were praised whereas the one who had the same amount on his master's return was punished and his talent given to the one with most talents already.

Matthew is urging his community to use their faith wisely to make progress in their spiritual life. Sometimes this desire to advance involves risk taking. When we reflect on our own life how many risks have we taken in our life of faith? Have we sometimes found it easier to play safe and do nothing?

Let us pray for wisdom this week, the wisdom which is more valuable than pearls. When it finds a home in us it will serve us well, prompting us to be active in our life of faith and go out to others in their need.
