33rd Sunday of the year

Malachi 3:19-20
Psalm 97
2Thessalonians 3:7-12
Luke 21:5-19
The readings today announce disasters to come at the end of time, which may remind us of the world of today, but we are promised strength to enable us to endure our difficulties. At a time when moral values were at a low ebb, the 5th century prophet Malachi warns about the day to come when the evil will be destroyed and the righteous will experience the healing warmth of the sun of justice.

At the time of Jesus' ministry, Jerusalem was facing a crisis and was to be destroyed just a few decades later. In the gospel, Luke puts this imminent disaster into cosmic proportions and extends his warnings to include the entire world. Jesus expects that his disciples would meet the same kind of controversy as himself but promises that he will strengthen them.

In the letter to the Thessalonians Paul encourages the community to go on working quietly and not to expect to be supported without making a contribution.
