34th Sunday of Ordinary Time - Christ the King

Daniel 7:13-14 Psalm 92 Apocalypse 1:5-8 John 18:33-37

Today we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. In the centuries before Jesus there was great expectation for a new and everlasting kingdom which would be brought about by God. Daniel described this kingdom as "a son of man" and although this term did not denote a real individual it soon became attached to the expected king. In the New Testament Jesus applies this term to himself.

In the Gospel of John Pilate asks Jesus if he is the king of the Jews. In the exchange which follows Jesus explains that his kingdom is not "of this world", identifying his kingdom with the kingdom in Daniel's vision. The book of the Apocalypse, composed of revelations of heaven and earth, makes known that after his resurrection Jesus Christ was installed as universal king.

Today's preface gives us food for thought as well as prayer: the kingdom Jesus presents to his father is a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace. Let us pray that God's kingdom may come and that we may make it a reality.
