3rd Sunday Lent

Exodus 3:1-8, 13-15 Psalm 103 Cor.10:1-6,10-12 Luke 13:1-9

In this week's liturgy we hear once again of God who is full of compassion. Moses was carrying out an ordinary task, looking after the sheep on the mountainside, when he had the most extraordinary experience of the nearness of God. Suddenly the ground on which he was standing became holy ground and God revealed that he, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, was to set the people of Israel free. Moses was so full of awe he had to cover his face. God called Moses by name but notice that God himself does not have a name. He is "I Am Who I Am". In Hebrew this is an active verb. God will be active in freeing his people from slavery.

The same God is also active in freeing us from the slavery of sin. In today's Gospel Luke tells us that if we repent God will have compassion on us and that we will not perish. God is so patient that he even waits for us to repent like a gardener who tends a fig tree waiting for it to bear fruit.

God is very near to us and is waiting patiently for each of us to come to him. Can we allow him to tend us and care for us in our weakness? Let us repent of our sinfulness and experience his love and compassion for us.
