Isaiah 661:1-2.10-11 Luke 1:46-50.53-54 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 John 1:6-8.19-287 Today, as we near the birth of Christ Jesus, we rejoice in our salvation. In the first reading, a prophet from the school of Isaiah announces that he is the bringer of good news to the people of Israel just returned from exile. Endowed with the Spirit and anointed by God, the prophet's gift of inner enlightenment enables him to see the total salvation of his people - bodily, spiritually, individually and socially. In anticipation of this event he cries out with joy to the Lord, a song echoed in today's psalm taken from Mary's prayer, the Magnificat. Just as last week, today's Gospel presents John the Baptist, this time from the Prologue to the Fourth Gospel. Here John is described as a witness who denies any messianic claims about himself and points beyond himself to Jesus, the light, who stands "unknown" among us. Do we witness to the dawn of salvation in our own lives? This week let us prepare an environment for salvation to take place - a garden of peace and healing for ourselves and for those around us.
