3rd Sunday of Advent, Year C

Zephaniah 3:14-20; Philippians 4:4-7; Luke 3:10-18

.

Today is a day for rejoicing. The prophet Zephaniah in 7th century BCE sees that the kingdom of Judah is to be destroyed by her enemies but in this passage he gives the people hope for the future. The Lord God, he says, is in their midst and will free them. When their day of liberation comes they will shout for joy, exult and dance. It will be like a festival day.

Paul tells the people of Philippi that the Lord is very near too. He was thinking that the time of the second coming of Christ was imminent, so it should be a time of happiness and peace for the early Christians

In today's gospel John the Baptist preaches a message of strict justice and repentance, urging his disciples to prepare for the One who is to come.

Practising justice and repentance for sins are also part of our preparations for the coming of Jesus. When we are frantically buying more and more let us think of those who are in need. What can we do for them this Christmas?
