4th Sunday of Advent, Year C

Micah 5:2-5 Hebrews 10:5-10 Luke 1: 39-45

.

In the readings for this, the last Sunday in Advent, we anticipate the birth of a new ruler and the beginning of a new world order. In the first reading the prophet Micah looks forward to the creation of a new and just society to come about in his own day and which will extend to the whole earth. The ruler will come from Bethlehem, David's birthplace and through the power of God he will bring peace to the kingdom of Judah.

The Gospel reading from Luke picks up the idea of an imminent birth. The two women, Mary and Elizabeth are each miraculously expecting a child and recognise that the power of God has brought this about in both of them. The gospel passage rings out with joy and praise to God for a wonderful fulfilment of his promises.

Let us praise God this week especially on Christmas Day for the wonderful things he has done in the world and in our own lives. Carols are a good way of praising God!
