Deuteronomy 18:15-20 Psalm 94 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 Mark 1:21-28 In today's first reading we hear that God communicated to his people through prophets like Moses and God promised them that he would raise another prophet from among themselves. For their part the people must listen to the prophet because his words are from God. The psalmist urges us to listen to the voice of the Lord and St Paul encourages us to give our undivided attention to him. Although the title prophet is not conferred on Jesus in today's Gospel reading his words and actions are prophetic in style. Mark tells how Jesus went to the synagogue on the Sabbath and taught the people. It was not unusual for a person with sufficient learning to teach during the service. He did not, apparently, teach like the scribes, the interpreters and teachers of the law, but his teaching had its own authority. Then he healed a man possessed of an evil spirit and the power of his words reinforced the authority of his teaching. The people were amazed at his supernatural powers. How do we hear God speaking to us now? One way is through the Word of God. Today you are invited to reflect deeply on one of the scripture readings or on a favourite passage. Let the words sink in and let God speak to you. Now be with Jesus as he teaches and heals the possessed man. Listen to him and watch him. How do his words and actions affect you? End your prayer by reading the psalm slowly and reflectively. |
