5th Sunday of Easter
Acts 6:1-7
Psalm 32
1 Peter 2:4-9
John 14: 1-12

Today's reading from the Acts of the Apostles shows how the early church began to develop. As the number of disciples increased the community needed a variety of ministries so that neither the service of the word nor the distribution of food was neglected.

In his letter Peter urges his readers to remain close to the Lord, the cornerstone, and so become living stones making a spiritual house. Believers in Jesus Christ are, Peter says, a chosen people, consecrated, set apart, a royal priesthood. Some of these titles were used of the people of Israel and some associated with the Messiah.

The Gospel is taken from the last discourse Jesus gave to his disciples. Here Jesus promises that he is going to prepare a place for his followers. He describes himself as "the Way, the Truth and the Life", a claim which may appear to be exclusive. However, these titles should not be used to exclude non-believers from attaining life with God. The important point here is that Jesus leads his followers to a deep union with his Father and that believers receive from the Father gifts which enable them to perform great works.

Today we are invited to live close to the Lord through a life of prayer. We never know where that life may lead us and what great works we may be asked to perform. Are we ready to accept the invitation and become living stones in God's spiritual house?
