5th Sunday of Lent
Ezekiel 37:12-14
Psalm 129
Romans 8:8-11
John 11:1-45

The theme of new life pervades today's readings. At the time of Ezekiel's vision, Jerusalem was derelict and the land laid waste. He sees nothing but dried-up bones, until the breath (or Spirit) of God fills the valley with life. It is a sign that God will give new life to his people, Israel, when he takes them out of exile back to their own land.

The gospel too tells the extraordinary story of Jesus raising his friend Lazarus from the tomb. Last week the healing of the blind man was a sign that Jesus was the light of the world and this week John shows that Jesus is also its life. The Fourth Gospel contains several "signs" - miracles which are not meant merely to bring people to faith but to go beyond the sign to a deeper recognition of the revelation of God in the word and person of Jesus. This sign of the raising of Lazarus demonstrates that the Father has given power over life and death to the Son. Those who recognise this truth may have life in his name.

St Paul says that if the Spirit of God is in you, if the breath of God inspires you, then your whole body is full of life.

When you reflect on the readings this week can you identify with the dry bones in the Ezekiel reading or with Lazarus in the Gospel? Is there something dry and "dead" within you?

Allow yourself to be open to the Spirit of God within you who can bring you to the fullness of life.

Pray with today's psalm and experience here and now a glimpse of the fullness of redemption awaiting you.
