Acts
10:25-26; 34-35; 44-48, Psalm 97, 1 John 4:7-10, John 15:9-17 In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Peter presents the universalist teaching that the pagans (or non- Jews) who believe in God and do what his right are just as acceptable to God as Jews. Confirming Peter's words the Holy Spirit came down on the listeners. This unasked for gift was "poured out" (see the prophecy of Joel already applied to Pentecost in Acts 2) on all present, Jew and non- Jew alike. The evidence for the Spirit's reception by the pagans was their ability to speak in strange languages and proclaim God's greatness. Peter judged that they were worthy and ready to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. The second reading and the gospel again focus on the commandment to love. Jesus calls the disciples his friends because he has made known (or revealed) to them everything he learnt from his father. Unlike servants they now enjoy an intimate relationship with Jesus and his Father based on a love which they are asked to share with one another. . Jesus says that loving others brings the gift of joy. Pray today that you may be filled with that joy through your love for others. Pray today's psalm joyfully, thanking God for making known his salvation to the nations |
