The thread running through today's readings is the passing on of the tradition of Jesus. In the Acts of the Apostles we hear how the Judas was replaced in order to keep the number of apostles to twelve, mirroring the twelve tribes of Israel on whose ingathering their ministry was focused. The prospective candidates had to have been disciples of Jesus witnessing to all that had happened throughout his ministry. Notice that the choice was finally not made by vote but by lot, as it was God who was doing the choosing. In the gospel passage Jesus is anticipating his ascension into heaven as he prays to his Father. Jesus prays for his apostles to whom he has passed God's word, that they may be consecrated in truth as they go out into the world. The second reading from the first letter of John gives us a glimpse of life in the Spirit who assures us that we are the dwelling place God's love. This week reflect on your sense of ministry to those among whom you live and work. Try to be aware of the long line of tradition from the apostles down to Christians today. Prepare for the coming of the Spirit at Pentecost and pray for the gifts the Spirit will bring. |
