Baptism of the Lord
Isaiah 55:1-11
Isaiah 12:2 - 6
1John 5:1-9
Mark 1:7-11

In today's first reading the prophet Isaiah exhorts the people of Israel, exiled in Babylon, to search for God. The invitation to eat and drink holds the promise of a banquet in messianic times. Although God is in some ways far away and incomprehensible, Isaiah assures us that he is not remote from human life but near. Just as God's word never remains suspended like clouds in mid-air but soaks the earth and is then drawn back to him, God's spirit is active within human beings bringing them to maturity and fullness of life.

The Gospel reading is Mark's version of the baptism of Jesus. Before he began is public mission Jesus came to be baptised by John in the river Jordan. Mark, like all the gospels tells us how God's Holy Spirit came to rest upon his Son, confirming the intimate relationship between them.

God invites us all to come to him as his children to share in his life to the full, so this week let us come to the Lord in prayer, through our relationships and activities, and enjoy the gifts he wants us to receive bringing us to wholeness.
