Feast of the birth of St John the Baptist
Isaiah 49:1-6 Psalm 138 Acts 13:22-26 Luke 1:57-66

The feast of the birth of John the Baptist recalls the re-commissioning of the prophet Isaiah. Like John the prophet describes his call taking place in the womb. In the Bible God sets his chosen ones on the way of their vocation even before their birth. Isaiah's task at this stage of his life was to teach the people that the time of servitude has ended and the time of grace has come. Cyrus, king of Persia was allowing them back to their homeland of Israel and the city of Jerusalem. God's call includes a mission to the prophet and therefore to the people to be a light to the nations.

John the Baptist's miraculous birth to a woman past child-bearing age was the sign that his life would be of great significance. As he grew, the Lord's presence in his life was evident. He prepared for his mission to announce the way of the Lord by going into the desert and fasting. His name, John, means God is merciful. God had shown mercy to the barren Elizabeth.

Today we think about our own call. The psalm indicates that God has a plan for each one. He knows us intimately from before our birth. Can we listen to God's call to us? What is God asking of us? How can I prepare to answer God's call?
