Solemnity of Mary Mother of God B
Numbers 6:22-27
Psalm 66
Galatians 4:4-7
Luke 2:16-21

The first reading today is known as the priestly blessing - reserved for the descendants of Aaron. The second and third parts of the blessing refer to God shining on his people, uncovering his face and bringing peace. The shepherds who visited the child in Bethlehem had experienced angels shining in the night sky and heard the message that a saviour had been born. The message carried by angels came from God. The evangelists understood that the Lord had truly uncovered his face at this moment and let his face shine on his people.

This week you are invited to reflect on the meaning of shalom, the Hebrew word for peace. Shalom means more than peace. It also carries the notion of wholeness and well-being. The city of Jerusalem has within its name the same word, shalom. At the beginning of this New Year let us pray for peace, wholeness and well-being in every area of the world where it is lacking, especially in Jerusalem and the Holy Land.

Take the psalm of the week and read it prayerfully. Ask God to let his face shine on every human being whatever his or her background or beliefs.

Let us be with Mary too. Imagine her listening to what the shepherds had to tell her. Sit with Mary as she treasures all these things and ponders them in her heart. Then be united with her as she had her son circumcised according to the covenant with Abraham.
